User-generated content appeals to readers

Newsrooms finding it difficult to produce sufficient local copy readers find appealing – hello, majority of editors – should consider a fairly quick fix: Regularly publish user-generated content.

“Your Turn,” which I introduced to the Appeal-Democrat a few years back, has undergone design and content changes but the core elements remain true: Photos of local “places and faces,” and readers’ opinions. Photos are submitted and voted upon through UPickem, and the comments are reversed-published from Facebook. The page is a section front on Monday – a day regularly thin on staff-generated content.

Word of warning: Folks can get testy about a photos contest.

User-generated content appeals to readers.

About Len La Barth

I am a longtime journalist still in love with this heartbreaking business.
